Citizens For A Safe Future For Midvale
Reports Good News
Sharon Steel:
How wonderful it is to announce that development is eminent at the Sharon Steel Superfund Site.
We are excited to welcome Benjamin R. Magelson, President of CREATERRA, INC. To Midvale. CREATERRA is a Brownfield Redevelopment company equipped with the foresight and expertise needed to restore this blighted Superfund site to beneficial use.
Citizens For A Safe Future For Midvale (CSFM) have been involved with many issues at this site from the time it was named Superfund. As one of our members put it: "We have been having an affair with this site for many years, and have a vested interest in its future."
We are pleased to announce that things are moving forward and that construction may begin as early as mid-August of this year. Soils are being hauled to the site to be surcharged to the cap, which will allow for the placement of infrastructure without violating the protectiveness of the remedy. Geo-technical tests are also being performed to determine structure, compaction and density; investigations of the moisture content of the soil and other issues are ongoing. In a recent meeting held by CSFM, Mark Easton, Vice President of PACIFIC WEST, a construction and environmental recycling service partnered with CREATERRA, stated: "Before we go to extreme measure we want an absolute understanding of the geo-technical issues".
The site will be known as Jordan Bluffs and will be a Master Planned Community complete with apartments, multi family units, detached homes, a village court square and commercial/light industrial uses. We envision a walk-able community with a looped trail system, 6 ft sidewalks, 20% open space and wetlands as an amenity. The project area will include community based assets such as a park, school and church sites and a community/recreation center.
We encourage CREATERRA and its partners to remain vigilant in protecting the remedy and sincerely hope that this venture will be beneficial to all, but most especially to the residents of Midvale.
Midvale Slag:
After months of legal and political wrangling, it seems that the Superfund process for Midvale Slag is back on track. The Consent Decree (CD) is due to be signed either at the printing of this article or shortly thereafter. It will then be lodged for 30 days after signature for public comment. We are hoping that dirt will be moved before this construction season comes to an end. We are anxious to see things moving again at this site and hope for a remedy that will allow for future or simultaneous development options.
Did You Know?
Did you know that Midvale Slag and Sharon Steel Superfund Sites together compare in size with the city of Manhattan? Just imagine New York City laying fallow, as these sites have been for many years. It is of vital import, that as we strive to protect the public from environmental dangers we consider the economic impact to the city.
We welcome interested persons to attend our regularly scheduled meetings, which are held the first Wednesday of every month from 6-8:00 P.M. in the Midvale City Hall Council Chambers. If you have any questions you may also reach us at: 801-446-9603 or visit our website which is www.midvaletag.org
